Consider This for your Bathroom Redo

CONSIDER THIS FOR YOUR BATHROOM REDO

As a professional interior designer in Bergen County NJ, I am often called upon to redo a client’s bathroom.  It may be that there was a leak that needed more than just repair.  Or, it is time for an update to an older home’s bathroom.  Many times, a new owner of an older house wants major changes to make that room function better than before.  Some people just want to personalize the bathroom to reflect themselves.

#1. WHAT SHOULD I CONSIDER WHEN THINKING ABOUT A NEW BATHROOM?

In a recent survey of people who are planning to renovate, are in the middle of renovating or just completed the project, when addressing their needs in the new bathroom, they considered adding the following items.

PLANNING AHEAD FOR FUTURE NEEDS.

What does this entail? It may mean changing the bathroom layout or removing the tubLarger showers may include seats, low curbs or curbless entry, grab bars and non-slide floors.

#2. WHAT FEATURES SHOULD I INCLUDE?

More space.

If space can be borrowed from next door or the hallway or even from the master bedroom to add to the size of the master bathroom, function will definitely improve.

Universal design.

No matter how old you are now, planning fixtures that incorporate universal design means that any person can use the bathroom even if they are incapacitated at some point.  Things like selecting a lever faucet over a round knob make lots of sense.

Different styles.

Vessel sinks are very popular and having two is back in vogue. Contemporary styling continues to be the leading choice.  Farmhouse style is gaining in popularity.  You should consider where you live if you want to use this style, so it doesn’t seem unfitting.

Better Fixtures.

One piece toilets that are wall hung are gaining in popularity. Heated seats are a wonderful perk!  So are wall hung vanities that make the room seem larger.

Warm floors are a plus using radiant heat underneath the tile to get that cozy feeling.

Better lighting.

As we age, we need more light.  The bathroom is a great place to add light to so you can see to do your hair, makeup and grooming!
