THROW OPEN THE DOORS FOR OUTSIDE ENTERTAINING

Outdoor living continues to grow in popularity. As a professional interior designer in Bergen County, NJ, I am often asked to help clients design their outside spaces as an extension of their home.

From lush container gardens to outdoor kitchens and lounging around the pool, the approach to designing these natural spaces is very much like the designing of the indoor spaces. It’s their outside “room”.

Today we have wonderful advances in materials that can withstand the elements with resistance to sun fading and water-proofing without losing softness of fabric.

#1. WHAT’S ON THE WISH LIST FOR OUTDOOR LIVING?

From the research, we know that people want more time outside to offset their hectic schedules.

They want shade systems to give them protection from harmful rays and provide a cool atmosphere.

They want a location for a fire pit if the regulations permit it so they can gather around when the sun goes down with friends and family.

They are looking for comfortable, durable seating with an area rug underfoot.

They would like to cook outside.  That could be a simple grill or a complete outside kitchen!

People don’t want to have to go back and forth from their inside kitchen to prepare a meal. That means refrigerators, storage, wine coolers, sinks and the like.

Just like inside!

#2. WHAT SHOULD I CONSIDER?

The first thing to look at is the space.  Is it a small apartment balcony or a large backyard, or something in the middle?  Each has their own challenges.

To keep the flow from inside to outside, the floor levels should be the same.  Once you are sufficiently away from the house and if the terrain allows it, a step down to a secondary space is a great way to define the “rooms’.

You need to check with your local building codes before you plan the flooring for your space.  There is a certain percentage of ground that can be covered by non-porous material to keep the absorption of water and run off on an even keel.  This is known as “permeable”.

Think about how you want to use your space.  Will you be entertaining, doing exercise, having cookouts?  Want a peaceful relaxation space?

Consider the lighting of the area too.  Lanterns and functional lighting will allow you to be outside after dark too.

Maintenance matters. How much do you want to do?

Do you have room for storage of cushions etc. that may need to come in?

When you are selecting materials for your furnishings, keep ecological choices uppermost in your mind. FSC certified products promote recycled plastics and proper foresting techniques.

Your outdoor space can be just as stylish and functional as the one indoors!
