What are the Top 3 Things Empty Nesters Want?

As a professional Interior Designer in Bergen County, NJ, I am often contacted by soon-to-be empty nesters (from the Baby Boomers generation), who are eager to downsize as their children leave home.  I would like to share some statistics of what the empty nesters are looking for.

#1. Downsizing

This is the primary reason people want to sell their family home. Things are changing and people have now begun to see their homes more as a shorter term investment than in years before when they stayed for many years.  As their family members move on, a big house to take care of can become a burden.

Today these people are interested in moving to a home or area that better suites their lifestyle. They no longer wish to take care of the exterior of their home or the landscaping.  They are ready to de-clutter their interiors and have more ease of care and simplicity.  Many are seeking a warmer climate all year round.

#2. Active Living

A move to a new home often reflects a couple’s passions whether it is golf, tennis or a social life. They want to be connected to others who share their passion.  Often they are in search of new friendships as older friends move away or retire.  Properties that have active clubhouses with spa-like amenities, an indoor and outdoor swimming pool and a gym are a high priority for some people.  Some communities have a schedule of cultural events and courses which are of interest which bring people together.

#3. What kind of home do they want?

The research is close to 50/50 when it comes to wanting a single-family home or a condo or townhouse.  Over 50 percent say they want their new adult community to be located close to or nearby their children or grandchildren.

They majority want the master bedroom suite to be on the first floor if it is a townhouse. Safety is a big issue with accessibility for the future high on the list of must haves.  Elevators are essential if the structure is two or three floors.

Are you ready for your next move?
