What Should You Know about Kitchen Trends Before You Renovate?

Did you know that in a recent survey conducted by the National Kitchen and Bath Association, contemporary styling beat out traditional kitchens to become the most popular kitchen design?

As a professional interior designer in Bergen County, New Jersey, I like to share the results with my clients when they are in the planning stage of a new kitchen renovation.

#1. What are the most popular cabinet designs today?

Most people are looking for clean lines, built-ins and simple door styles.  These have been dominating kitchen designs lately.  Upcoming trends in the design of kitchens include a more industrial look. Mid-century modern design is also trending.

Since this is the largest investment you will make in your home, you need to be sure that what you select is not a fad that will date your kitchen in the future and make your home more difficult to turn over at selling time.

#2. What is the most popular color scheme for kitchens?

With no sign of slowing down, the most favorite colors are still white and gray painted cabinets.  Coming up behind that look is blue painted cabinets. High gloss cabinets are up and coming. Black is re-emerging along with blue.

Two toned looks are popular again as people mix it up. Some mix materials and metals.  If you aren’t sure, you can use these special selections as an accessory.  That way you aren’t married to it forever!

Wood cabinets are still dominating the designs but metal cabinetry especially in the doors is being specified more frequently.

#3. What are the features most requested?

Convenience and efficiency are most often requested in redesigning a kitchen. Some want a piece or two to look like furniture. The most asked for feature is the roll-out or pull-out drawers/shelves.  Under-cabinet lighting is going more towards using LED lights.

The most popular countertop material is now quartz for its ease of cleaning and anti-microbial traits. Granite is still in the running and is the second most popular counter used.

#4. What can you say about appliances?

Induction cook tops may require a whole new set of pots and pans but it is growing in popularity. Convection ovens help to reduce cooking time. Microwave drawers are often used more than built-in types now.

Technology in the kitchen is a whole other topic. Wiring and future technical integration is needed for the offerings that keep coming.

#5. How does a new kitchen help the client?

When planning a new kitchen we need to be aware of today and tomorrow. A kitchen lasts a long time when designed properly.  Making sure it will work for you in the future is a major planning feature. Accessibility features are incorporated so you will be able to continue to use your new kitchen with little trouble now and as you continue to thrive in place.
