What’s Hot in Kitchen Design Right Now?

A well designed kitchen is priceless~

A well designed kitchen is priceless~

As our too-short summer comes to a close shortly, many people see the fall months as an opportunity to make changes in their lives. They are finally getting to the home projects they have been postponing for a while.  As a professional Interior Designer in Bergen County NJ, I have been busy working with my clients to renovate and make their kitchens better!

Leading the way now are several key trends. A kitchen remodel is a great investment and will add value to your home.  More than that, it premendously increases your convenience and improves your quality of life.  It is hard to put a price on that!

Kitchens have clean lines.

Clients of all ages are into de-cluttering their lives. Making your life simpler is a topic that is discussed in many books and is becoming a lifestyle. Kitchens are reflecting this too. Pared down cabinetry with less embellishment is the rule now. A totally traditional or even transitional design style is taking a back seat to just simple, clean lines. Better organization and improved function are very important in designing a kitchen today.

Color and personal expression.

Appliance manufacturers have heeded the call. If this is too much of a permanent commitment for you, you could try to introduce color into the backsplash or even with added accessories or hardware which can be changed in the future.  Everywhere you look, in magazines and online sites, white, off-white, beige and grey are still the top choices clients are selecting. However, bolder colors are making headway in these neutral color schemes. It seems that people want to warm up and personalize their spaces and this is a way to do it.

Storage.

Saving space is still a very key aspect of kitchen planning. Pull-outs are not just for the client who has difficulty reaching back into a base cabinet. Convenience is more essential than ever before. This is universal design which means everyone can benefit. Whether you are just starting out or decide to live in place, there are lots of creative ways to design storage for your stuff in kitchen design today.

Technology.

We all have numerous devices.  They are such a part of our everyday lives and continue to have a tremendous impact on kitchen design.  That is where many of our gadgets end up at the end of the day. Docking and charging stations, flat screen tv’s, and small home office zones are all in demand in today’s kitchen. And you thought the kitchen was for cooking! Even our new appliances are “smart” and can be turned on remotely from our phones!

Specialty areas.

People are into good health and wellness today. They want the appliances that incorporate new ways to actually cook the food, whether by convection, induction, high heat or steam.   You may actually need a class to figure some of this out!

Today the kitchen is increasingly open to other areas of the home and is still the gathering space for family and friends. It is a very interactive space for food prep and entertaining. This means the island is a “must have” for many people.  People who watch tv food networks want to try out the gourmet recipes that intrigue them. The proper utensils, great space planning and design are important factors in making the whole process easier. Wine storage, coffee stations, wet bars, and designated pet zones are just some of the areas requested in today’s kitchen.

Check that one off.
