3 Tips to Make Your Kitchen Renovation Easier

This is the first in a series of blogs about renovation/remodeling which is a huge trend in Bergen County NJ and elsewhere this year.

Kitchen renovation or remodeling is very hot right now.  It is considered a big project and it has lots of variables to consider.  As a professional Interior Designer in Bergen County NJ, this is one of my top requested projects.

The kitchen’s function has drastically changed over the years and is now considered a multi-use space. It’s no longer just the place where you cook.  It’s now an office, an entertaining and congregating space where you hang out with friends and family and sometimes, even a place where you bathe the dog!

The kitchen is now the heart of the home.  No matter what you use the kitchen for, it has to function the best way possible.

It’s sometimes a scary process for the homeowner. What if “best way possible” means removing a window for more storage cabinetry?  Maybe “best way possible” means removing a wall and all it entails—wiring, plumbing, HVAC ducts, possible beam support, etc.  Spend a considerable amount of time in planning.  List all the wishes you have for your new kitchen.  Then let a professional guide you to the best solutions for your home and budget.

What if you make the wrong decision?

In kitchen re-design it could mean thousands of dollars down the drain to replace it or many years of unhappiness.

Knowledge of products and their advantages and disadvantages, detailed planning and good design based on a realistic budget is so important.

It’s a process–a design process.

Here are 3 tips to consider and make it easier:

#1. Don’t leave out the small stuff

Things like additional drawer dividers or pantry pullouts are much costlier to install after the fact, if you want them down the road.

#2. Upgrade

Although the kitchen is one of the costlier projects to tackle, you need to consider it as an investment in your home. The return is both now and in the future.  Now, the return you get is because you will have the opportunity to enjoy the new kitchen for many years.  In the future, when you go to sell your home an upgraded kitchen will bring you a significantly higher selling price.

#3. Don’t forget the big picture.

There are so many decisions you have to make in remodeling a kitchen. People tend to fall in love with an object and want to include it in their kitchen selections.  Don’t fall into the “I love it” trap.  Think about each element as a part of the whole.  How do all these separate elements fit together for a cohesive look?

Kitchens are the soul of the house. The best kitchens have warmth, are inviting and have an element of the personal touch.

Are you ready for the kitchen you’ve always wanted?
