What’s up in Bathroom Design for next Year?

Don’t you think that the bathroom is one of the most important and personal spaces in a home? You look at this space as your private retreat where you can concentrate on yourself. It is your oasis in a crazy, hectic world.

I want to share with you some of the hottest trends I see happening in bathroom design: simplicity, personalization and safety/well-being. See if you agree with me on these thoughts:

I. Simplicity.

We are looking for clean lines and simple designs that are spa-like with non-fussy details.
We want everything we need to prepare for the day or evening to be at our finger tips without having to search for it.

We want enough storage in this space to hold multiples of the things we use often.
We want to use natural materials in soothing earth-tone colors that are easy to maintain and keep clean.
We want to be able to see the back of our heads.
We like warm towels if possible.

II. Personalization.

We are interested in having controls for the shower that are pre-set to our likes.
We like to play music or listen to the news or even have the ability to watch the morning shows while we are getting ready for the day.
We like the idea of having Chroma and Aroma therapy for relaxation at the end of the day.
We like massaging bubbles.
We are kind of done with so many body sprays.
Some of us like to stand under rain shower heads and some of us don’t.
We all like hand held shower heads and tub faucets, even if it is just to clean the large tub!
We like larger sized showers, sometimes at the expense of having a tub.
But we like soaking tubs too; just as long as we can have the shower too.

III. Safety and well-being.

We are starting to believe we will be better off if we put in the kinds of designs that anyone can use, no matter their age.
We are using barrier free shower entries with no curb to step over.
We are putting in accessible tubs.
We are widening doorways and even using pocket doors for accessibility.
We are using grab bars even if it is only to hang the wash cloth on for now.
We are insisting on anti-scald plumbing in all our bathrooms not just the master.
We are focusing on sustainability by using water conservation for the toilet and shower heads.
We are putting in folding seats in the shower even if we don’t really need them yet.

I find that what clients used to request for “luxury” items are now becoming the standard.
